Smartphones Give Alternative Way to Maintain Road Safety
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that last 2010, there are 4,280 pedestrians and 618 bicyclists who died because of vehicular accidents in the United States. The number of casualties is still increasing these days. To avoid these catastrophes, the General Motors worked on the innovation of a wireless technology that will help the drivers detect the people and motorists crossing the streets during low visibility instances. Fogs that block the driver’s view of the road could be a factor why a lot of people get hit by vehicles.
Using this technological advancement, smartphones will have the ability to connect with each other in a peer-to-peer fashion. This will lead to easier communications among motorists. The GM team found out that WiFi Direct can help detect the presence of pedestrians using sensors and alert systems that will be embedded on the cars upon production. After the applications for the said WiFi device are done, they will be available for downloading. GM also said that these devices will determine if the person is a biker, motorist, distracted texter, construction worker and so on.
These vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) advancements from GM will indeed serve as warnings and precautions against hazards and future accidents. Nady Boules of GM Global R&D reported that “This new wireless capability could warn drivers about pedestrians who might be stepping into the roadway from behind a parked vehicle, or bicyclists who are riding in the car’s blind spot,”
She also added that Wi-Fi Direct is a potential tool in the system of drivers’ assistance that is typically found in Cadillacs, Buicks, GMC Vehicles and Chevrolets. Accessibility is easier because a phone does not have to connect to the nearest cell site to pick up warning signals because the WiFi functionalities will deliver it to the users. The gadget will detect all WiFi Direct users from a 656 feet distance and it will serve as a surveillance program that will tell people if they are about to collide with another bearer.
Believe in the power of WiFi Direct and tell your friends that this will keep their safety on the road.
